Case Study 1- Case Study: Breaking Stigma and Saving Lives Through Early Intervention

Client 2 disclosed that his relationship was breaking down and that he was struggling with severe anxiety and declining mental health. He felt unable to speak to his wife or anyone within his community due to deep feelings of shame. His mental health was beginning to affect his work, and he openly shared that he was experiencing suicidal thoughts.

LTI provided immediate, compassionate support. A private referral was made to a community mental health nurse, and intensive, onetoone support was offered. To reduce barriers and anxiety, the worker accompanied the client to his first appointment, ensuring he was not alone at a critical moment.

With ongoing support, the client gradually rebuilt confidence and was supported to open up to his wife, who became a key source of strength in his recovery. As his wellbeing improved, he made the courageous decision to share his story publicly. Client 2 spoke out on social media and later featured in Traveller Times magazine, urging others within his community to seek help and challenge stigma around mental health.

He described accessing support as “lifechanging”.

Why This Matters

This case demonstrates how early, trusted intervention can prevent crisis and save lives. It also shows how funded support can create ripple effects beyond the individual—reducing stigma, strengthening families, and empowering communities to seek help and support one another.

Case Study: Supporting a Child Excluded from Mainstream Education

This student was permanently excluded from school in Year 9 after the school stated they could no longer meet her needs. Despite concerns about ADHD and learning difficulties, no reasonable adjustments were made due to the lack of a formal diagnosis or EHCP. The ongoing conflict with school had a profound impact on both the child and her mother’s mental health.

An online learning package provided by the local authority quickly proved unsuitable, increasing distress and disengagement. The family chose Elective Home Education and were referred to LTI as the child’s mental health deteriorated, including self-harming behaviours and frequent emotional meltdowns.

LTI provided holistic, child-centred support, building trust and addressing both emotional wellbeing and learning needs. The service supported the family to access medical advice, leading to the start of the ADHD assessment process. Alongside this, LTI delivered tailored education focused on emotional regulation, confidence, and learning at an appropriate pace.

Within three weeks, the child re-engaged with learning and began working towards Functional Skills qualifications and wellbeing units. Her self-belief transformed from “I can’t do it” to a confident, goal-focused outlook. She is now volunteering weekly at her former primary school, where staff describe her as “an asset”, particularly in supporting pupils with Autism and ADHD.

Ongoing Support LTI continues to support her and her mother by:

  • Supporting the ADHD assessment process
  • Providingongoing educational guidance
  • Building confidence, self-esteem, and self-belief
  • Supporting family wellbeing and relationships

Parent Reflection

“Without LTI, I would have felt like I had failed my child. They understood her, accepted her, and saw her potential. My daughter is happy again. She no longer hurts herself, manages her emotions better, and our relationship is beautiful again. I will be forever grateful.

Why This Matters

This case highlights LTI’s vital role in preventing harm, restoring hope, and enabling children excluded from mainstream education to thrive through whole-family, personalised support.
